boot sequence stuck in loop - rawmeat - 07-23-2019 Hello. I had installed LL on my sister's old Vaio. When trying to boot up, it seems stuck in a loop. It will show the feather, check speakers, then the screen goes blank. digging deeper, here's where it's getting stuck .... Re: boot sequence stuck in loop - minesheep - 07-23-2019 Did it boot up correctly early? What does checking speakers mean? Did you make big changes to it before it got broken? Re: boot sequence stuck in loop - rawmeat - 07-23-2019 The computer speakers make an audible popping sound during boot up, always have. No big changes, it just stopped booting... The bootup goes to the yellow feather... then gets stuck in a loop. Update: I had forgotten in Recovery Mode to try to "Update grub boot loader" After doing so, and then Resume Normal boot, it booted correctly. However, I got error when attempting to update LL. Also, after shutting down and trying to boot normally ... It is again stuck in the same loop. Went back into Recovery Mode, again Updated grub boot loader... Resume Normal boot.. it boots correctly. But on restart it goes back to being stuck in the loop. What to do =) The data on the machine has been saved. Simply re-install? ... It seems to have gone a bit beyond him (and me), but we are having fun working on it together and appreciate the help. Re: boot sequence stuck in loop - trinidad - 07-23-2019 You say you're dual booting here? Boot into Windows and then shut it down holding the left shift key down when you select shutdown and until it goes completely off. Then run manual fsck when your restart LL. After LL boots update grub. TC Re: boot sequence stuck in loop - torreydale - 07-23-2019 [member=9493]rawmeat[/member] , First, you shouldn't post screenshots using Dropbox. Revisit the posting guidelines to see how to include images to your forum postings. Secondly, I have a friend who had a booting loop with their PC. The PC would get to a login screen. When typing in the password, the display would go black and then return to the login screen. Upon researching the issue, I deduced the problem was due to lack of free space. When I got to his PC, that was confirmed. At the login screen, I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 or F2 or F3 to get to a command line. I logged in using his username and password. Then from the command line, I typed in the following: Code: df -h From there I could see that the root (ie. "/") partition was 100% used. His PC only came with 32GB of storage. So I typed in "sudo apt autoremove" to clean up some space, mainly old kernels. That removed enough space to allow me to log into the desktop. When in the desktop, I opened up Timeshift and removed old Timeshift snapshots. I ended up with nearly 20GB of freespace and things were back to normal. I also set his PC to only hold 2 snapshots instead of the 4-5 it was saving before. Not sure if lack of free space is your problem, but if it is, perhaps my anecdote above will be helpful. Re: boot sequence stuck in loop - trinidad - 07-23-2019 "sysenter_past_esp+0x3d/0x61" https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelOops Could be many causes but I'd bet on corrupted file system which yes can be caused by disk over full as suggested. Use "something else" when asked to and set your own partition(s) "/", "/home" and what did you have, but don't format the partition(s). This will simply re-install system files and may break some programs. You can re install applications that stop working if any. |
