How is Wayland with NVIDIA now? - drewdavis - 09-09-2024

I've heard the horror stories of NVIDIA support with Wayland in the past, and I'm wondering if things have improved. I've been unable to find a recent post of the matter. I will be using graphically intensive apps including games, game engines, and modelling apps. How is it with this? Thank you!

I'm curious about what you heard!

NVIDIA has made strides in its proprietary drivers, adding support for GBM, which is essential for smoother Wayland integration. Earlier reliance on EGLStreams caused compatibility issues, but GBM adoption has bridged the gap between NVIDIA and Wayland compositors.

NVIDIA's support for Wayland has improved significantly in recent years, especially with the latest proprietary drivers. However, some issues still persist, particularly in areas like screen tearing, multi-monitor setups, and certain gaming/mode-switching scenarios. If you're planning to use graphically intensive applications such as game engines, modeling software, or high-performance gaming, it's advisable to test your specific workflow under Wayland before fully committing.
