Storing your backup on the same drive you backed up may have a good bit to do with it all. Backing up to the same drive you're using is NEVER a good idea.
I'm surprised that DejaDup even lets you do that. When the drive dies (or is killed), the backup goes away with it - which is why you backed everything up in the first place...
