Updating when to?

One question please Updating ..How do you know when to update Linux Lite there seems to be no indication anywhere when updates are available like another Linux Distro i use

Recommended way is to run "Install Updates" in the Menu.  There's no auto-notification of when updates are available.  It's up to your own discretion how often to check for updates.  Some people do it every day, others less frequently.  I usually do it every 2-4 weeks, but that's just me.  Most people probably update more often than me.  If you don't want to bother with it every day, then just get into the habit of doing it once a week.

Does anyone know whether Synaptic's update notification (-> Settings -> Repositories -> Updates) is actually working respectively why not? It would at least cover security updates. Also don't know why "When there are other updates" options are deactivated.

As far as I know that works.  You just hit "Mark all upgrades" to find them.  BUT it's not recommended doing updates through Synaptic because it will pull-in more items than standard "Install Updates" method -- some of which could cause issues (eg. it will pull in new kernels, which may or may not break something).

Don't know what you are referring to with "When there are other updates" option being deactivated.  I don't see that anywhere, so can you provide a screenshot of where you found that?
