I actually was not referring to the "Mark all updates" feature which would be just a(nother) manual process anyway.
I was referring to is this setting tap within Synaptic:

1. "Display immediately" - Is that only within Synaptic or is there a system notification to pop up? I would expect "Automatically check for updates" to be a background process that runs without Synaptic being manually opened?
2. "When there are other updates" - no option available
All rather wild guesses as I'm not using Synaptic. I usually work with aptitude (preferred) or apt-get.
Nevertheless it would be very handy to get a notification/ reminder if updates are available. Especially for people who just want to use the system. Sure I can set up cron jobs or even make use of apticron, cron-apt, Pain in the APT etc. But that's a bit much to ask from people switching to Linux/LL.
