I don't know the reason why a prompt doesn't exist, but I speculate that having a process run in the background, constantly checking for updates and prompting the user, adds weight to a distribution trying to remain lightweight.  You'll just have to tell her to manually check for them every so often.  I've developed the habit of checking each weekday evening, for example.
