I've thought about using the proprietary binaries. Past experience was messy, but that was some years back.
By the way, I made an attempt to implement the 4.16 kernel on my main workstation, with a GeForce GT 730 video card and dual monitors, following up with the installation of the 390.48 proprietary PPA-provided driver. It worked, except LL 3.8 wouldn't recognize the existence of the second monitor. So I'm back to the 4.4 kernel. I've stayed with the 390.48 driver, though--no problems at this time.
It appears to me that if I had a single monitor output this would have worked. Good news for some. Oh well...another time, then.
