I use Romanian layout as the default on an English interface. If the setup is followed by adding the keyboard layout and then the tray applet, you can change the layout with Alt+Shift (or whatever accelerator you choose). But first, you need to add the second layout, or else, the applet stays invisible. You also need to set the default layout, after installing the mapping driver, and it has to be system wide. If you bind the setting to the session level, when restarting it will fall back to the default layout (English, usually).
This was available for sure since LL 4.2 and I guess since LL 3.6 but that's too far away.... I might be wrong.
In 6.0, nothing changed in what's regarding those keyboard settings so, everything it's already there, nothing to add to 6.2.
