Unable to find wifi networks
#1
Hello,

I've recently installed the newest version of Linux Lite 5.0 on my older HP Stream BCM943142HM. When I attempt to find WiFi there is a rectangle in the lower right corner with an x on it that says "No network devices available". I am able to connect to my WiFi on my phone, new Acer Laptop running Microsoft. I am also able to connect to my WiFi when I use the live boot of Linux Lite on my new laptop. I'm unsure of how to fix this issue after googling and looking around the forum for an answer. Unfortunately the HP laptop I am trying gain WiFi access through does not have an ethernet port, so that it is not an option for internet.

My network card is:
Code:
Network:
  Device-1: Broadcom and subsidiaries BCM43142 802.11b/g/n driver: N/A

When I enter rfkill list it states:
Code:
0: hci0: Bluetooth
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no

I'm not sure what my options are and am very new to Linux. I apologize as this is a frequent question however was unable to find an answer that rectified my current situation.

Thank you!

On a Linux Lite pc with Internet, open a Terminal, do:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
apt-get download broadcom-sta-dkms

copy file to a USB. Copy to Broadcom pc, double click file and install.

Reboot.

When I get onto a new PC and have network trouble, most of the time it's Broadcom... sad.
On a more positive note, they seems to be better supported in Linux (with the right drivers).

Tip of the day : Don't put those cards in a server. Which is usually the default, choose the premium "Intel" or other option.

Thank you Jerry! That did the trick and I am now able to use my WiFi with Linux Lite on my HP laptop. I will keep that in mind TheDead if I ever need to create a server. I appreciate both of your responses and hope you both are having a good day.
